The X-Net training network builds on Edinburgh’s Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship (XDF) and Oxford’s Biomedical Data Science Training (OBDS). Interdisciplinary training focusses on conducting collaborative research, establishing networks, exploring concepts and approaches of other disciplines, and developing skills in interacting and communicating with people in other fields. UKRI has a significant role to play in incentivising and rewarding interdisciplinary research endeavours, through various policy levers it possesses to support research and innovation.

UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) five-year (2022-2027) strategy sets out long-term, high-level priorities for how an outstanding research and innovation system will be delivered in the UK. It highlights UKRI’s key role in delivering the government’s ambitions for the UK as a global leader in research and innovation. The strategy is underpinned by four principles for change: diversity, connectivity, resilience and engagement. These principles are fundamental and will help to create the conditions for the UK’s research and innovation system to flourish.
